Funerals were held for the victims who died in the explosion at Hanwha Aerospace's Daejeon plant on the first of this month.
On Tuesday morning, funeral services were held for three of the five victims at the funeral hall of Yuseong Sun Hospital in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, where the bereaved families had set up the memorial altars. The families, who had maintained grief-stricken expressions throughout the funeral period, finally broke into tears as the portraits of the deceased were placed in the hearses. One family member, unable to let go of the hearse, wailed, "How can you leave like this?"
Coworkers who came to bid their final farewells to the deceased were also seen repeatedly wiping away tears. Hanwha Aerospace executives and employees, including Hanwha Vice Chairman Yeo Seung-joo and Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il, paid their respects to the deceased.
The victims were colleagues who had worked together in the cleaning room at Hanwha Aerospace's Daejeon plant where the explosion occurred. The explosion took place at around 10:59 a.m. on the first of this month in Building 56 of Hanwha Aerospace's Daejeon plant in Oesam-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, killing five people and injuring two.
At the same plant, five people died in an explosion in May 2018, and three workers died in February 2019 in an explosion in the propellant demolding room. Including this latest accident, 13 workers have died in explosions at the same plant over eight years.
