Son Bae-chan, the Democratic Party of Korea candidate for Paju mayor, has secured victory in the 9th nationwide local elections.
According to the National Election Commission's vote tally, with 63.87% of ballots counted as of 2:30 a.m., Son received 59.44% of the vote, defeating People Power Party candidate Kang Soo-hyun, who garnered 40.55%.
Immediately after his victory was confirmed, Son said, "Today's victory is not a personal win for Son Bae-chan, but a victory for all the great citizens of Paju who longed for a better future for our city."
Son extended his gratitude to those who joined him during the campaign. "Today's result was made possible by the sweat and dedication poured out on the streets from early morning to late at night," he said. "I will not forget that passion and support, and will make it the driving force of my administration."
He also emphasized his commitment to fulfilling promises made to citizens. "I will never forget the earnest voices and sharp rebukes I heard from citizens on the ground," Son said. "I will become a public servant who proves Paju's transformation through action and results, not words."
Son also expressed respect for his opponents and a willingness to pursue unity. "I pay tribute to the candidates who worked together for Paju's development," he said. "I will bring together public sentiment divided by the election and actively review the good policies and pledges of rival candidates to build a unified Paju."
Regarding his future administrative direction, Son said, "I will maintain a pragmatic approach with the conviction that when Paju changes, our lives change." He added, "I will work tirelessly alongside citizens to build a Paju where citizens are the owners — a proud city where everyone wants to live."
"The election is coming to an end, but Paju's new leap forward begins now," he said. "Together with citizens, I will achieve greater development and surely deliver the changes I promised."
