The Korea National Railway (KR) has won a supervision contract for the Huancayo Railway, known as the "Iron Horse of the Andes," in Peru.
The Korea National Railway announced Thursday that it has been selected as the final contractor for the "Peru Huancayo-Huancavelica Railway Modernization Design Review and Construction Supervision" project, worth approximately $13 million (about 19.2 billion won), ordered by Peru's Transport Infrastructure Investment Oversight Authority.
The project involves modernizing an aging 128.7-kilometer line that runs through the high-altitude Andean region of central Peru at elevations above 3,600 meters. The Korea National Railway consortium will perform supervision duties across both construction and operation phases over approximately five years.
The Korea National Railway formed a global consortium with domestic engineering firms and a local partner, securing the contract by ranking first with perfect scores in both technology and price categories after competing against global railway powerhouses including Spain and Japan.
Building on this project, the Korea National Railway plans to serve as a catalyst to help Korean railway companies enter the Peruvian market and expand its share of large-scale railway infrastructure markets in nearby Latin American countries such as El Salvador, Panama and Colombia.
"This is a remarkable achievement that once again proves the excellent technological capabilities of K-Rail after competing against advanced global railway nations," said Lee An-ho, acting chairman of the Korea National Railway.
