Renovation work on the Myeongam Observatory Tower, set to become a new landmark in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, is moving into full swing.
The renovation was confirmed after the tower's free-use permit expired in June 2023, followed by a process that included drawing up utilization plans, conducting a precision safety inspection, and surveying public opinion. The detailed design service was completed in December last year, based on the winning entry of an architectural design competition.
The renovation project carries a total budget of 19.4 billion won, including 18.2 billion won in construction costs, with completion targeted for July 2027.
The work will cover the structure from the second basement level to the first floor above ground. The tower will be transformed into a multipurpose cultural complex featuring restaurant startup spaces, rest areas including stepped lounges and family rest zones, a small performance hall, cultural facilities such as a citizens' art exhibition room and education rooms, and an outdoor garden.
Following the project's groundbreaking last month, preparatory work for demolition is currently under way, with both interior and exterior demolition scheduled to be completed by next month.
"We will safely carry out the renovation work as scheduled," a city official said.
