Yangju City in Gyeonggi Province has converted long-unused city-owned land and former road sites into neighborhood green spaces.
Yangju said Wednesday it has completed construction of two pocket parks in Gwangseok-ri, Gwangjeok-myeon, and Bokji-ri, Baekseok-eup. The project repurposes neglected public land as urban green space.
A park featuring green space and rest areas has been built at 76-5 and 76-16 Gwangseok-ri, Gwangjeok-myeon. The site was designed for shared use by children from a nearby daycare center and local residents. Tree planting is also expected to help reduce fine dust.
At 235-14 and 235-16 Bokji-ri, Baekseok-eup, a pocket park was created on a former road site. Various species, including trees and shrubs, were planted to secure green space within the urban area. Converting the road site into greenery is expected to improve the city's appearance and the pedestrian environment.
Both parks are now open to the public.
"We will continue to pursue projects to create neighborhood green and rest areas to improve the quality of life for our citizens," a Yangju city official said.
