Gyeongsangnam-do Province is recruiting participants for its "4 City 3 Fishing Village" boat fishing experience program, where participants head out to sea alongside local fishermen, the provincial government announced Wednesday. The "4 City 3 Fishing Village" program was launched in 2024 as the nation's first initiative designed to encourage urban residents to relocate to fishing villages.
The program is designed to introduce city residents to the appeal of Gyeongnam's coastal areas, with participants spending four days in the city and three days in a fishing village to experience the fishing industry and village life. The program stands out as a "premium living experience" that goes beyond conventional tideland or shellfish-gathering activities, allowing participants to board local fishermen's boats and experience the fishing process firsthand.
This year's program will run twice. A boat fishing experience will be held in June, followed by an aquaculture experience in September. The first program, the boat fishing experience, will take place over three days and two nights from the 19th to the 21st of this month in the Jungchon village area of Sacheon.
Selected participants will experience the daily routines of fishermen, including theory of boat fishing, auctions at fish landing markets, fish trap production and practice, and outboard motor operation. Veteran captains with decades of experience will also serve as mentors, sharing boat operation techniques and practical information essential for those considering relocating to fishing villages.
The program is open to urban residents aged 18 or older who are interested in relocating to fishing villages in Gyeongnam Province, with applications accepted through the 10th of this month. Recruitment is limited to 10 participants on a first-come, first-served basis, with no participation fee and accommodations and meals provided. Applications can be submitted through the Gyeongnam Province Fishing Village Relocation Support Center website.
