Train services disrupted by the collapse of the Seosomun overpass in Seoul will fully return to normal operation starting Wednesday.
The Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) said Tuesday that it had "completed recovery work by mobilizing all available resources and will operate all trains normally starting tomorrow (Wednesday)."
After the Seoul city government completed the demolition of Seosomun, railway authorities carried out overnight recovery work on rail facilities, including the removal and installation of catenary poles, the stringing of overhead contact lines, the laying of cables, the installation of signaling equipment, and inspections for track damage. Safety checks were also conducted using motor cars and through trial runs of trains.
KORAIL explained that following decisions to deploy trains that had completed vehicle inspections and maintenance, all trains will be able to operate normally beginning Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, four days after the collapse, KORAIL resumed Gyeongui Line service in the morning, while the KTX-Eum service on the Gangneung and Jungang lines between Seoul and Cheongnyangni Station also returned to normal operation Tuesday morning.
"Despite the unavoidable reduction in train services, we will repay the public, who trusted and waited for us, with a safer and more convenient railway," KORAIL President Kim Tae-seung said.
