
Goyang City in Gyeonggi Province is launching full-scale operation of a system that controls traffic signals in real time using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
The city announced on the 27th that it has begun official operation of an "AI-based real-time traffic signal system" at seven intersections along Hwajeong-ro, in front of Hwajeong Station. The move follows the successful completion of a one-month pilot operation in April.
The system operates by collecting real-time traffic volume through directional CCTVs installed at each intersection. AI analyzes the data, calculates the optimal signal timing, and automatically applies it on site.
The city completed development of the system between October last year and January this year. After consultations with the Goyang Police Station, the pilot operation was carried out for one month in April.
During the pilot operation, signal timing was flexibly adjusted by a minimum of 4 seconds to a maximum of 26 seconds at each intersection point. Unnecessary signal wait times were reduced as a result.
Since Hwajeong-ro is a section where traffic typically flows smoothly, no dramatic improvement was seen in the indicators. However, the system's effectiveness was demonstrated at the Chungjang-ro and Hwajeong-ro three-way intersection, where unnecessary simultaneous straight-and-left-turn signals were reduced and straight-through time was extended.
The city plans to conduct continuous monitoring of the Hwajeong-ro section. It is also reviewing expansion of the real-time AI traffic signal system to chronically congested sections.
"Through an intelligent transportation system utilizing cutting-edge AI technology, we will provide citizens with a safer and more comfortable traffic environment," a Goyang City official said.
