Seoul's Mapo District has created a temporary rose garden on a vacant redevelopment site (255-9 Gongdeok-dong) in front of Exit 5 of Gongdeok Station, transforming it into a downtown rest area.
The approximately 420-square-meter site had previously been criticized for its existing barriers, which obstructed views and impeded pedestrian access. The district removed the barriers in March and renovated the area into a garden.
The garden features 3,000 four-season roses along with rounded yew and liriope. The four-season roses bloom from this month through November, providing scenic views throughout the seasons. Coconut fiber mats have been installed along the walkway to improve accessibility.
Mapo District plans to relocate the planted trees and shrubs to parks and green spaces once construction begins on the site. Meanwhile, a water feature with a waterfall and pond has been installed on the traffic island at the Gongdeok five-way intersection, contributing to the improvement of the downtown landscape alongside the rose garden.
