The Korea National Railway Authority is launching a review service to assess the adequacy of reinforcement measures related to missing column rebar at GTX-A Samsung Station.
The Railway Authority announced Thursday that it will commission the Korea Concrete Institute, a specialized accredited organization, to conduct a "Column Reinforcement Adequacy Review" to ensure objective and thorough verification of structural safety. The review concerns rebar omission construction errors identified in the basement fifth floor of the Samsung Station structure, part of the "Yeongdong-daero Underground Complex Development Section 3 Construction Project" being carried out under commission by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
The Korea Concrete Institute will organize a specialized research team centered on academic experts in the fields of "concrete structural analysis and reinforcement, and railway structure safety assessment." The team will conduct objective and detailed verification over approximately four to five months, from May to September 2026.
The review will comprehensively examine the column reinforcement plan established by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, covering the structural performance verification of Samsung Station, the safety review of the reinforcement methods, the review of alternative methods, the relationship with train operations, and safety and maintenance during the operational phase.
"Through thorough and objective verification by a credible specialized academic society, we aim to derive the optimal reinforcement plan," Acting Chairman Lee An-ho of the Korea National Railway Authority said. "Going forward, we will minimize risk factors during the operational phase so that the public can safely use the GTX-A."
