Seoul's Seodaemun-gu will run a "2026 Voluntary Pet Registration Period" for four months, spanning May-June and September-October. Dog owners who register their pets during this period will be exempt from non-registration fines of up to 600,000 won.
Pet registration can be completed at designated veterinary clinics through either an internal microchip implant or an external identification device. Seodaemun-gu residents who register dogs or cats with internal microchips at local veterinary clinics will receive up to 40,000 won per animal in registration cost support, with no limit on the number of pets.
After registration, owners must also report any changes, including updates to personal information, address, or phone number, as well as cases of lost, recovered, or deceased animals.
The district plans to conduct intensive inspections of pet registration status at parks, walking trails, and other key areas frequented by dogs in July and November.
"Pet registration is the 'bond of love' that protects companion animals," a district official said. "We ask for active participation in registration to help establish a responsible pet culture."
The pet registration system is mandated under the Animal Protection Act. Dogs aged two months or older must be registered, while cat registration is optional. For more information, contact the Companion Animal Support Division at the Seodaemun-gu Office.
