
Artificial intelligence (AI) electrocardiogram technology that predicts heart failure risk even in asymptomatic patients is drawing attention. Kim Kyung-hee, director of the Heart Transplantation Center at Incheon Sejong Hospital, presented on the clinical applications of AI-based ECG at an international conference held in Taiwan.
According to the hospital on Wednesday, Kim recently delivered a lecture on "Perioperative Heart Failure Management Using AI-Based ECG" at the Taiwan Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (TSA 2026) conference held at the Taipei International Convention Center.
AI-ECG analyzes electrocardiogram waveforms using deep learning algorithms. It can detect signs of heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and left ventricular dysfunction even in test results that appear normal to physicians. A single ECG obtained during a routine health checkup could serve as a clue for preventing serious cardiac disease.
The technology is also useful for patients scheduled for surgery. By calculating the likelihood of cardiac complications in advance, anesthesiology and surgical teams can prepare preventive measures. Its utility is particularly high for patients at elevated cardiovascular risk, such as elderly patients with diabetes or hypertension.
In her lecture, Kim introduced AI-ECG risk prediction models and early diagnosis strategies. Related research is rapidly expanding worldwide in perioperative risk assessment and severe cardiovascular disease management.
"AI is filling the blind spots of conventional ECG analysis, broadening the scope of clinical applications," Kim said. "It was a meaningful occasion to share the latest research findings with medical professionals from abroad."
