Namyangju City in Gyeonggi Province is accelerating preparations for summer natural disasters, prioritizing citizen safety even under its acting mayor system.
According to the city on Wednesday, Kim Sang-soo, acting mayor of Namyangju, along with heads of relevant departments, conducted on-site inspections of flood-vulnerable areas and major disaster prevention facilities. The inspection was arranged to ensure that key projects proceed without disruption under the acting mayor system.
The inspection team visited Sinhachon Village in Toegyewon-eup, the Jingeon Drainage Pump Station, and the construction site for automatic blocking facilities at an underpass in Dasan-dong in sequence.
Sinhachon Village in Toegyewon-eup is an area at high risk of flooding when the water level of Wangsuk Stream rises during heavy rainfall. The city is installing flood barriers, inspecting sewage pipes, and repairing roads. It also plans to build a 2,450-cubic-meter retention basin and install two 30-horsepower drainage pumps, with major works set to be completed before the rainy season.
The Jingeon Drainage Pump Station is a key disaster prevention facility equipped with eight drainage pumps across a 26,950-square-meter retention area. It has a drainage capacity of 3,420 tons per minute. The inspection focused on the operational status of major equipment, including the pump room, electrical room, and integrated monitoring and control room.
Installation of automatic blocking facilities is underway at the Jungchon 1, Jungchon 2, and Donong underpasses. With a total project cost of 1.5 billion won, the work is targeted for completion in June. Water level sensors will detect flooding and automatically block vehicle entry, helping to prevent casualties and property damage inside the underpasses.
"Disaster response is above all about prevention rather than post-event recovery," Acting Mayor Kim said. "We will immediately address the issues identified on site and swiftly push forward measures for each vulnerable area before the rainy season."
The city plans to continue inspecting major disaster prevention facilities and flood-prone areas before the rainy season and to strengthen field-oriented disaster prevention administration.
