Gachon University Gil Medical Center said Tuesday it is deploying artificial intelligence (AI) across its nursing operations. The hospital has launched a "smart nursing" roadmap that automates core areas of hospital management, from shift scheduling to medical record-keeping.
The most notable initiative is an AI-powered shift scheduling system set to debut next year. Tasks that previously took head nurses a full week to complete will be handled by AI within a single day. An algorithm trained on individual circumstances and ward conditions will automatically generate fair staffing arrangements.
The look of the examination room will also change in three years. The AI charting system, scheduled for introduction in 2028, will listen to conversations between doctors and patients in real time, with generative AI organizing key points on the spot. Medical staff will be able to maintain eye contact with patients while AI handles the documentation.
Some technologies have already been validated in the field. "Smart CLMA," launched in June 2023, uses around 350 handheld devices carried by nurses to perform double verification of patient identity and medication information. The system serves as a safety net that prevents incorrect medications from reaching patients at the system level.
AI also monitors the movements of patients lying in bed. Sensors installed on beds designated for high-risk fall patients detect abnormal signs and immediately alert the nursing station. Bed assignments are also automated, with AI selecting the optimal room based on each patient's condition.
In the second half of the year, the hospital plans to digitize bedside electronic nameplates and rounding schedules as well.
