A woman in her 30s has been booked by police for fabricating a news broadcast clip of President Lee Jae-myung's diplomatic schedule by inserting a false subtitle related to former President Yoon Suk-yeol's trial and circulating it online.
The Cyber Crime Investigation Unit of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency said Monday that it had booked the woman, identified only as A, without detention on charges including obstruction of business and violation of the copyright law, and was investigating the case.
According to police, A is accused of creating an image with a fabricated subtitle superimposed on the news footage of a domestic news channel on January 13 and posting it on social media. She reportedly added the phrase "Yoon Suk-yeol smiles at the moment of death penalty sentencing request...commotion in the gallery" to a scene showing President Lee playing the drums during his visit to Japan at the time.
During police questioning, A admitted to the charges, saying she "wanted to show the contrasting fates of the former and current presidents at the same time" and that she "synthesized it for fun," according to police.
Police plan to investigate the possibility of accomplices and additional offenses through analysis of seized materials.
