A memorial service for victims of the Anjeon Industry fire disaster in Daejeon, which left 74 people dead or injured, was held Friday at a joint mourning altar in Munpyeong Park in Daedeok-gu, 50 days after the tragedy.
Munpyeong Park, where the memorial was held, is located near Anjeon Industry and was a place the deceased frequently passed through on their commutes or visited to rest. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety and Daejeon City moved the joint mourning altar from Daejeon City Hall to Munpyeong Park on the 7th of this month. The joint mourning altar ended its operation on this day.
"Along with our condolences and words of comfort, the government will do its best to determine the exact cause of the accident and implement follow-up measures going forward, as it has done since the accident," Kim Han-soo, Disaster Site Support Officer at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said in a memorial address. "We will build a memorial facility here, next to the workplace where the deceased worked with their sweat, at the earliest possible date. We will remember the tears of the families left behind."
The Anjeon Industry fire disaster occurred at around 1:17 p.m. on March 20 at the company's auto parts factory. The fire killed 14 Anjeon Industry employees and injured 60 others to varying degrees. Police have booked eight people without detention, including Anjeon Industry CEO Son Ju-hwan and company safety management officials, on charges of professional negligence resulting in death and injury, and are investigating the cause of the accident.
