Eight sites in Incheon's old downtown districts have secured opportunities to build self-sustaining foundations for urban regeneration. The Incheon Urban Regeneration Support Center announced the selected sites for this year's public contest on Wednesday.
The contest has two purposes: cultivating candidate sites for entry into the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Urban Regeneration New Deal program, and supporting the independent operation of shared-use facilities in areas where projects have concluded.
Under Type 1, the "Incheon-style Urban Regeneration Preliminary Project" aimed at discovering new sites, "The Brightest Smile" and "Jakjeokieum" were selected. The review panel reportedly focused on the potential for linkage with the Land Ministry's contest and the scalability of each project within the region.
Type 2, the "Shared-Use Facility Revitalization Support Project," selected the largest number with five sites: "Hahagol," "Path of People," "Blooming Namchon Village Management Social Cooperative," "Soeppul Village Social Cooperative," and "Manbit Social Cooperative Preparatory Committee." Project sustainability and the capacity to build cooperative frameworks with local governments determined the outcomes.
For Type 3, the "Saengdonggam Project," a social contribution program run by Incheon Urban Corporation (iH), "Ari Village" was the sole selection. The core task is to revive the village's vitality through the renovation of aging landscapes.
"The significance lies in going beyond one-time budget support to create a stepping stone through which communities can grow on their own and connect to urban regeneration projects," Center Director Park Hyung-gyun said.
