Police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor have launched a compulsory investigation to determine responsibility for a fatal submarine fire that occurred last month at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Ulsan shipyard.
The Ulsan branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Ulsan Metropolitan Police Agency said Thursday that they have been conducting raids on HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Ulsan headquarters and offices of related subcontractors since 9 a.m., mobilizing some 60 labor inspectors and police officers.
The raid follows a serious industrial accident that occurred on the afternoon of the 9th of last month at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Ulsan shipyard. A fire broke out on the ROKS Hong Beom-do, a Type 214 Navy submarine undergoing maintenance at the time, killing a female subcontractor worker in her 60s who was at the scene.
The joint investigation team from the police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor is focusing on securing key evidence, including PCs and related documents belonging to those connected to the accident. Through analysis of the seized materials, investigators plan to examine whether essential safety measures, including evacuation guidance, were properly implemented at the scene when the fire broke out.
