Min Kyung-sun, the Democratic Party of Korea's candidate for Goyang mayor, has fully rejected allegations of violating the Political Funds Act and called on police to expedite their investigation.
Min held an emergency press conference at his campaign headquarters on the 6th, saying, "I request the police to swiftly investigate so that the facts can be clearly established and I can compete confidently in the main election."
At the press conference, Min disclosed a written confirmation from builder A, the central figure in the allegations. In the document, A stated, "I have never delivered any money or valuables to candidate Min," adding, "I have never expected or requested any favoritism regarding permits and approvals for land in the Gangmae-dong area."
Min also questioned the motives of the complainant, identified as B. According to reports, B left a company operated by A in 2023 and filed a fraud complaint against A, which resulted in a decision not to forward the case to prosecutors. A is currently preparing legal action against B on charges of occupational embezzlement, according to sources.
"As the conflict between the two sides has intensified, I suspect B is claiming without any basis that money was given in order to damage A, who supports me," Min said. "I have never driven or purchased the SUV that B claims was involved."
Min's campaign committee views the allegations as involving an organized force behind the scenes and has launched a strong legal response. The committee filed a counter-complaint against the complainant at the Goyang Police Station on charges of disseminating false information and defamation under the Public Official Election Act.
The campaign also plans to file for mediation with the Press Arbitration Commission and request rebuttal coverage from the Election Broadcasting Deliberation Commission regarding media outlets that reported on the case.
"We have not yet obtained the contents of the complaint and have filed an information disclosure request," Min said. "I urge the police to conduct a swift investigation."
Meanwhile, police have transferred the case from the Goyang Police Station to the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency and are accelerating the investigation, including questioning witnesses.
