High School Girl Fatally Stabbed in Pre-Dawn Gwangju Attack

A high school girl was stabbed to death by an assailant in downtown Gwangju in the early morning hours.

According to Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station on Sunday, at around 12:11 a.m., a high school junior identified as A was stabbed by an unidentified man, B, on a sidewalk near a university in Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju.

B also swung the weapon at a male student who had come to help after hearing the girl's screams nearby, before fleeing the scene.

A was transported to a hospital but later died. The male student is receiving treatment and is not in life-threatening condition.

Police have identified the suspect through closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage analysis and are tracking him. The suspect is a man in his 20s, and he is reportedly unknown to both victims.

Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the case, focusing on the possibility that it may be a so-called "random attack."
