Gyeonggi Province has introduced the Peace Nuri Trail Course 2, known as the "Jogang Barbed-Wire Trail," as its recommended walking route for May. The 8-kilometer section around Munsusanseong Fortress in Gimpo offers a hiking course that combines relics from the 1866 French campaign with views of North Korea. An accommodation program priced at under 20,000 won ($15) per person is also available.
Gyeonggi Province has been introducing monthly Peace Nuri Trail courses under the theme "Contemplating the DMZ in Four Colors." Opened in 2010 as Korea's northernmost walking trail, the Peace Nuri Trail connects four cities and counties: Gimpo, Goyang, Paju and Yeoncheon. The trail comprises 12 courses spanning approximately 189 kilometers.
◇ An 8-Kilometer Hike Starting at Munsusanseong South Gate
The Jogang Barbed-Wire Trail begins at the south gate of Munsusanseong Fortress. Walking along gentle slopes and winding fortress walls, hikers occasionally catch glimpses of the Jogang estuary. The route includes sections ascending and descending Munsu Mountain and Aegibong Peak, offering both hiking and walking experiences.
Munsusanseong Fortress is a historic site where fierce battles against French forces took place during the 1866 French campaign (Byeonginyangyo). The Hongyemun arched gate at the mid-slope of the fortress is said to have served as a passage for soldiers and supplies to move while avoiding enemy surveillance. In May, the surrounding area turns pink with blooming azaleas.
From the summit of Munsusanseong Fortress, visitors can take in a panoramic view of the Jogang estuary, where the Yeomha and Han rivers converge. On clear days, the view extends to Ganghwa Island, the old Ganghwa Bridge and parts of North Korea. The old Ganghwa Bridge is currently restricted to vehicle traffic and operates as part of a Peace Trail course dedicated to cyclists and pedestrians.
Hikers can rest at the Peace Trail Hub Center (Gimpo Center). Rooms can be booked online for under 20,000 won ($15) per person. Starting in late April, the "Gimpo DMZ Healing Stay" program, which traverses Peace Trail Courses 2, 3 and 4, will also be offered, providing extended-stay travel experiences.
◇ Aegibong Peace Ecopark Emerges as Tourist Destination at Division Frontline
The Jogang Barbed-Wire Trail ends at the entrance to Aegibong Peak. The nearby Aegibong Peace Ecopark reopened after demolishing its aging observatory in 2021 and constructing a new Peace Ecology Exhibition Hall, Jogang Observatory and ecological trails. Designed by architect Seung H-Sang, the park has recently emerged as a tourist destination with the opening of a well-known franchise coffee shop.
From the observatory, visitors can clearly view the Jogang estuary, where the Han and Imjin rivers meet, as well as North Korea's Kaepung County area. However, as the park is located within the Civilian Control Line, advance reservations are required and visitors must present identification upon entry.
Gyeonggi Province plans to continue introducing Peace Nuri Trail courses that highlight seasonal characteristics, aiming to expand demand for walking tourism in the DMZ border region.
