
A teenage passenger was killed after a car driven by another teenager overturned in Donghae, Gangwon Province, with police investigating the driver for suspected drunk driving.
According to the Gangwon Provincial Fire Headquarters and Donghae Police Station, a report was received at around 1:24 a.m. Friday that a compact car had overturned on a road near Daejin Beach in Mangsang-dong, Donghae.
Police believe the driver, identified only as A, 19, was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Her blood alcohol concentration measured 0.062%, a level warranting license suspension under Korean law.
A, a college student, was driving a vehicle registered to her parents and was carrying two friends, identified as B, 19, and C, 18, at the time of the accident. B, who was in the front passenger seat, was transported to a hospital in cardiac arrest and later died. A and C sustained relatively minor injuries including abrasions, and A is currently receiving hospital treatment, according to authorities.
Police booked A on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents (causing death) and plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the crash.
