Public institutions in Busan's Centum District are strengthening ESG (environmental, social, and governance) cooperation to respond to the climate crisis and enhance community safety. The move reflects an accelerating push to build a "regional ESG model" centered on joint action, going beyond individual institutional responses.
Seventeen institutions in the Centum District, including the APEC Climate Center (APCC), held the "Q2 2026 Eu-Sseuk (ESG) Council Regular Meeting" at the Busan Design Center on the 29th and finalized this year's joint action tasks, they announced on the 30th.
The meeting was arranged to review cooperation outcomes accumulated since the council's launch in July 2024 and to jointly respond to regional issues such as the deepening climate crisis and crimes impersonating public institutions. The council presented three core tasks spanning the environmental (E), social (S), and governance (G) sectors.
In the environmental sector, the institutions agreed to jointly carry out five climate action pledges: saving energy, reducing plastic use, expanding vegetarian meals, using public transportation, and proper waste separation. In particular, they plan to lead public-sector energy conservation policies by expanding "green commuting," which cuts carbon emissions during commutes.
In the social sector, the focus is on responding to the recent surge in crimes impersonating public institutions. Together with the Haeundae Police Station, the council will cooperate through a "Joint Declaration to Eradicate No-Show Fraud" to promote prevention guidelines and prevent the spread of damage. This is a preemptive response aimed at reducing reservation defaults and phone financial scams targeting small business owners.
On the governance side, the institutions will expand continuous social contribution activities that leverage each institution's expertise. The council envisions establishing itself as a "Centum District-type ESG platform" by continuously pursuing ESG programs linked with the local community.
A total of 17 institutions participate in the council, including APCC, the Game Rating and Administration Committee, BEXCO, the Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency, the Korean Film Council, and the Korea Press Foundation.
"The climate crisis is a challenge that cannot be solved by the efforts of any single institution," said Lee Jong-jin, head of APCC's management support office. "Centum District institutions will continue to expand their efforts, from daily practices to creating social value that the local community can tangibly experience."
