A non-union truck driver who rammed and killed a member of the Cargo Truckers Solidarity Division (Cargo Solidarity) under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU)'s Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union has been referred to prosecutors.
The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency's Metropolitan Investigation Unit said Monday that it had indicted a non-union member in his 40s, identified as A, on charges including murder while holding him in custody.
A was driving a 2.5-ton truck out of the area near a protest site in front of the CJ Jinju Logistics Center around 10:32 a.m. on the 20th of this month when three Cargo Solidarity members blocked his path. He then rammed into them. One union member in his 50s was transported to a hospital in cardiac arrest but ultimately died. Two other union members sustained serious and minor injuries, respectively.
At the time of the incident, police arrested A on the spot on charges of aggravated assault. However, authorities later determined that he had acted with willful negligence and applied murder charges.
Police also referred to prosecutors two Cargo Solidarity members held in custody on charges including obstruction of official duties by special means: B, in his 60s, and C, in his 50s. B is accused of driving a van into a police barricade in front of the CU Jinju Logistics Center on the 20th of this month and then ramming into the center's main gate, injuring one police officer, and injuring two other officers while resisting arrest. C was arrested on the 19th of this month on charges of attempting self-harm with a weapon at the protest site and threatening to harm police officers and others.
