The Busan International Short Film Festival, a signature spring film event in Busan, is set to raise its curtain. This year, the festival has named France as its guest country, shedding new light on the origins and aesthetics of cinema.
According to the Busan Metropolitan Government on Tuesday, the 43rd Busan International Short Film Festival will run for six days from April 23 to 28. Launched in 1980, the festival is Korea's largest international short film festival and is now in its 43rd edition. Screenings will take place across Busan, including at the Busan Cinema Center, BNK Busan Bank Art Cinema and Moa Theater.
This year's theme is "Cinema & Lumiere." The festival focuses on exploring the origins and expansion of cinema, centered on the aesthetics of "light" and "image" that constitute the essence of film. A record 5,966 works from 124 countries were submitted to this year's edition. Of these, 40 films in the international competition and 20 in the Korean competition have advanced to the finals, where they will compete in artistry and quality.
A key highlight is the special French program commemorating the 140th anniversary of Korea-France diplomatic relations. With France designated as guest country, the festival will spotlight the history and artistry of French cinema through the special screening "Korea-France, Crossed Perspectives," along with the "Cinémathèque Française Special Exhibition" and the "Light of the Nouvelle Vague" program. France was the first guest country when the program was introduced in 2012, adding symbolic significance to this year's reselection.
The opening ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on April 23 at the Busan Cinema Center. Four films will be screened as opening works: France's "There's Always Something Forgotten," China's "Roundabout," Germany's "The Film That Never Existed," and the Netherlands' "Fanny." Singer-songwriter Yubali will also perform, presenting an opening stage that combines film and music.
During the festival, various side programs will be held, including talks and roundtable discussions where directors meet audiences in person. Starting this year, the schedule for the short film production support program has been moved up, with public presentations to be held during the festival and final selections to be announced at the closing ceremony. The closing ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. on April 28 at the Busan Cinema Center.
The Busan International Short Film Festival is Korea's first Academy-qualifying festival, with the best works in the international and Korean competition sections automatically recommended as candidates for the short film categories at the U.S. Academy Awards.
"Through this festival, which designated France as guest country to mark the 140th anniversary of Korea-France diplomatic relations, audiences will be able to experience both the flow of world cinema and its artistic depth," said Cho Yu-jang, director general of Busan's Culture Bureau. "Busan will continue to strengthen its status as a global film city."
