A wolf named "Neukgu," which escaped from Daejeon O-World and captured nationwide attention, was safely recaptured after 10 days on the run. Once dubbed a "symbol of freedom," Neukgu is now undergoing treatment and recovery, while discussions have expanded to the zoo's reopening timeline and animal welfare concerns.
"Captured After 10-Day Escape"… Attention From Home and Abroad
According to the Daejeon city government on Tuesday, Neukgu was struck with a tranquilizer dart and captured at around 12:44 a.m. on Monday near Anyeong IC, about 1 kilometer from the zoo. It had been 10 days since the wolf escaped its enclosure on the 8th.
After its escape, Neukgu repeatedly evaded tracking operations involving hundreds of personnel, drones, and thermal imaging equipment, displaying what many described as elusive behavior. Each time search teams tightened the net, the wolf slipped through, drawing growing national attention.
Online, posts tracking Neukgu's movements and messages of support continued to spread, with many saying they hoped the wolf would return safely. Some internet users even called Neukgu the zoo's "honorary ambassador" and expressed intentions to visit after the reopening.
The saga also drew significant attention overseas. On the 17th, the BBC described Neukgu as "a wolf that refuses to be caged" and "a symbol of freedom," while Reuters reported that a "Neukgu meme coin" had even emerged online. CNN also reported that "messages welcoming Neukgu's return are pouring in."
"Fish Hook Found Inside"… Wolf Returns Bearing Traces of the Wild

Neukgu is currently receiving recovery treatment at the animal hospital inside O-World. Its overall health is good, but the wolf has lost about 3 kilograms after its first experience of life in the wild.
Notably, a 2.6-centimeter fish hook was found in its stomach and removed via endoscopic procedure. The hook is presumed to have been swallowed while the wolf searched for food in the wild. Fortunately, no major issues such as organ damage were detected.
To reduce digestive strain, food is being provided in smaller, ground portions, with a mix of chicken and beef. Medication is also being added to the food to guard against possible tick or viral infections.
Neukgu is recovering quickly and has been consuming all of its meals. Depending on its condition, additional high-nutrient foods such as beef liver are planned to be supplied.
"We Want to See Neukgu vs. Environment Must Improve"… Remaining Challenges

Neukgu is currently being kept in isolation. Although the enclosure housing its wolf family is only about 300 meters away, contact will be restricted for at least one week to 10 days due to the risk of external viral infection.
As a result, O-World's reopening has also been delayed. While the reopening had initially been expected after Neukgu's capture, weekend operations have been suspended as facility inspections and repair work continue.
Among citizens, expectations to "see Neukgu in person" are growing, but it is expected to take more time before the wolf is made publicly available for viewing.
Meanwhile, the incident has fueled broader discussions about animal welfare and captive environments. Some civic groups have pointed out that the facility management issues that caused the escape must be reviewed and that animal protection standards should be strengthened.
"Neukgu's recovery is the top priority at the moment," a Daejeon city official said. "We will decide on the reopening date after facility improvements and measures to prevent a recurrence are in place."
