The joint prosecution-police investigation headquarters that issued a non-prosecution decision on allegations that Jeon Jae-su, the Democratic Party of Korea's Busan mayoral candidate for the June 3rd local elections, received money and goods from the Unification Church has been reported to the police.
Former Seoul City Council member Lee Jong-bae announced on the morning of the 12th that he filed a complaint through the Government Civil Petition Portal to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency against joint investigation headquarters chief Kim Tae-hoon and the person responsible for the disposition regarding candidate Jeon on charges of distortion of law and special dereliction of duty.
Former council member Lee claimed that the joint investigation headquarters failed to properly apply relevant laws in order to give candidate Jeon improper investigative benefits. He also pointed out that the investigation revealed evidence destruction acts such as office PC initialization and hard disk damage, and that these could not have been independent actions by candidate Jeon's staff alone, arguing that the joint investigation headquarters neglected its duties.
The joint investigation headquarters issued a non-prosecution decision on the 10th of this month for candidate Jeon, who was accused of receiving expensive watches and other items from the Unification Church side around 2018, citing expired statute of limitations or insufficient evidence as reasons for "no right to prosecute" and "lack of evidence." This came just one day after he was confirmed as the Democratic Party's Busan mayoral candidate. However, four staff members were indicted without detention on charges of evidence destruction.
