Korea Forest Service (KFS) announced on the 2nd that it signed a Framework Arrangement (FA) on Core Programs in the Forestry Sector and a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Wildfire Management and Wildfire Damage Restoration with Indonesia's Ministry of Forestry on the 1st, strengthening bilateral forest cooperation.
KFS Commissioner Park Eun-sik and Indonesian Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni agreed to cooperate on climate crisis response, including sustainable management of forests and mangrove ecosystems, forest disaster management such as wildfires, and development of forest carbon markets.
The two countries also agreed to collaborate on resolving various forestry issues, including expanding the Asia Forest Fire Management Activity (FFMA) through the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO) and monitoring wildfire-damaged areas and forest restoration projects using agricultural and forestry satellites.
In particular, the Indonesian delegation observed Korea's advanced aerial firefighting system, which rapidly responds to wildfires using helicopters and drones, and discussed cooperation and development measures.
"Korea and Indonesia are core partners in international exchange, having maintained forest cooperation for approximately 40 years," KFS Commissioner Park said. "As the climate crisis deepens, we will strengthen cooperation with Indonesia to ensure sustainable forest management, including forest management and wildfire disaster response."
