Cheoin-gu district in Yongin announced Wednesday that its plan to expand the Mohyeon-eup Community Center has passed a conditional review by the Gyeonggi Province First Local Fiscal Investment Review Committee.
The project will add 1,542 square meters of floor space to the existing community center at the Mohyeon-eup Administrative Welfare Center, expanding it to a building with one basement level and three above-ground floors.
The city will invest 9.9 billion won ($7.3 million) to create cultural program rooms, a multipurpose hall, a fitness center and other community and leisure facilities for local residents.
With the review cleared, Cheoin-gu will establish a public property management plan this year and complete procedures including a design competition next year. If the project proceeds on schedule, construction is expected to begin in 2028 and be completed in the second half of 2029.
The Mohyeon-eup Administrative Welfare Center was built in 2006. At the time, the township's population was approximately 20,000. Large-scale apartment complex developments have since pushed the population to around 36,000 as of March this year, making Mohyeon-eup the most populous among the seven townships in Cheoin-gu.
Mohyeon-eup residents have been using part of the 20-year-old welfare center as a community center, but insufficient space and aging facilities have made it difficult to operate programs.
"We expect the Mohyeon-eup Community Center expansion project to provide a space where local residents can engage in daily life, cultural and leisure activities," Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il said. "We will make thorough preparations to ensure the project proceeds smoothly and resolves the inconveniences faced by residents."
