Uijeongbu, a city in Gyeonggi Province north of Seoul, is launching a comprehensive urban restructuring strategy integrating transportation, urban space, and commercial districts ahead of the construction of the Greater Seoul Express Railway (GTX) Line C.
According to Uijeongbu city officials Wednesday, Mayor Kim Dong-geun conducted an on-site inspection of the planned GTX Line C Uijeongbu Station project area. Starting from the Exit 7 area, he reviewed the southern entrance and the planned installation site for elevator facilities in front of Exit 1, examining the project section, pedestrian routes, and transfer systems.
Preparatory work for construction, including relocation of underground utilities, will begin in late April. GTX Line C is a key metropolitan express railway connecting Deokjeong in Yangju to Suwon. Once operational, travel from Uijeongbu to Changdong Station will take approximately 5 minutes, and to Samsung Station approximately 20 minutes.
The city is pursuing three strategic projects, viewing the GTX introduction as an opportunity for urban restructuring.
Specifically, the city was selected as a candidate site for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "Spatial Innovation Leading Project" in July 2024, laying the groundwork for urban space reorganization around Uijeongbu Station. It was also selected for the "Multimodal Transfer Center Consulting Support Project" in 2025, initiating plans for an integrated transfer system connecting GTX, railways, buses, and pedestrian routes.
Additionally, through the "Gyeonggi Province Traditional Market Innovation Model Project" with a total budget of 9.4 billion won, the city plans to strengthen the central commercial district's functions, including the creation of a specialized street along Haengbok-ro.
If Metro Line 8 is connected in the future, Uijeongbu Station is expected to become a northern metropolitan transportation hub where six lines intersect. The city plans to develop the area around Uijeongbu Station into a high-density mixed-use district combining commercial, business, and residential functions.
The multimodal transfer center will serve to distribute foot traffic from the station area throughout the downtown. The Haengbok-ro specialized street will be developed to create conditions for visitors to stay and spend.
"The construction of GTX Line C marks the beginning of a full-scale transformation of Uijeongbu's urban structure," Mayor Kim said. "We will strengthen urban functions by integrating spatial innovation, transfer system development, and central function reorganization."
