Seoul's aging traditional markets are being transformed with modern design sensibilities. The markets are expected to be reborn as "design landmark traditional markets" that preserve unique character and local culture, evolving into open public spaces frequented by younger generations and tourists.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on January 8 that it is launching the "Design Innovation Traditional Market Development Project," starting with Sinjungang Market in Hwanghak-dong, Jung-gu, to integrate design innovation into traditional markets.
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon visited Sinjungang Market in the morning to review the project's progress and unveiled the final design plan, selected through a design competition, to citizens and reporters. The site inspection was arranged for the mayor to personally check the progress and oversee the upcoming schedule, as the project has entered the full-scale design phase following its selection in the design competition in July last year.
