As the Democratic Party of Korea's primary for Mokpo mayor in South Jeolla Province concluded ahead of the June 3 local elections, Park Hong-ryul, a formidable general election contender, has shed his independent status and joined the Cho Kuk Innovation Party.
"At least in the Honam region, there should be a party that competes in good faith," Park said. "In the progressive camp, having a party other than just the Democratic Party is a desirable political structure for citizens and voters."
Park explained his decision to join the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, saying, "Watching the Democratic Party's Mokpo mayor primary process, I felt troubled seeing politics portrayed as internal conflict rather than competition for citizens. I made a new choice to create a healthier political ecosystem."
Park congratulated Kang Sung-hwi, who won the Democratic Party primary, and proposed they both commit to fair election practices. He called for an end to negative campaigning and requested a policy-focused election that complies with election laws and unites the public sentiment divided during the primary process.
Local political observers note that given the contentious nature of the Democratic Party's Mokpo mayor primary, the key points of this election will be how much political skill Kang can demonstrate to achieve "one team" unity, and how far Park's efforts to consolidate support as the Cho Kuk Innovation Party candidate can reach by targeting this opening.
