The city of Yongin announced Monday that it is proceeding with a naming process for road infrastructure within the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex under construction in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, incorporating the region's history, culture and place names.
The city is assigning names drawn from centuries-old village names and local folklore to road facilities in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, where SK hynix (000660.KS) is investing approximately 600 trillion won ($432 billion) to build the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex.
From June 23 to 25, the city convened the second Yongin City Place Name Committee of 2026 to deliberate on naming proposals for road infrastructure being built in and around the complex.
The naming process covers a total of 30 road facilities, including nine bridges, one underpass and 20 intersections. Many of the proposed names are pure Korean terms discovered through historical documents and local heritage materials.
In January this year, the city held a public consultation meeting with village heads in Wonsam-myeon. Suggestions from local residents — including "Sunmuji Samgeori," "Jungteo Sageori" and "Dokchon Sageori" — were incorporated into the proposals.
"Sunmuji" is the name of a village in Godang-ri, Wonsam-myeon. It is a pure Korean rendering of "Sundang (笋塘)," meaning a pond where water shield plants grow.
"Jungteo" is a village name in Dokseong 1-ri, Wonsam-myeon, and "Dokcheon" is the old name of Dokseong-ri.
Among the proposed names, "Yagwangju Bridge" is a newly built bridge connecting Munchon-ri, Yagwang Village and Jukneung-ri under the new main access road plan for the complex. The name "Yagwangju," meaning "luminous pearl," originates from a Joseon Dynasty legend in which the Buddhist monk Muhak Daesa, while surveying the land for a new capital site, described the area as having the shape of a place where a luminous pearl is buried.
The city explained that this naming process goes beyond a simple administrative procedure. It embodies the history and identity of Yongin Special City as it leaps forward to become a city leading the global semiconductor industry, and is expected to serve as an opportunity for citizens to take greater pride in Yongin.
Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il said, "The name 'Yagwangju Bridge' was chosen with the aspiration that, like a jewel glowing even in darkness, the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex will become a gateway illuminating the world's advanced industries." He added, "This naming process will serve as an occasion to inscribe together the future of Yongin Special City, which leads the global semiconductor industry, and the history and stories preserved by the residents of Wonsam-myeon."
