The children's zoo at Incheon Grand Park, which had been closed for more than two months due to a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak, will reopen on April 14. Animal education classes will also resume starting in May.
The Incheon Grand Park Office shut down the children's zoo on an emergency basis after FMD was detected in Incheon's Ganghwa County in February to prevent the disease from spreading. The office decided to reopen the facility after the special quarantine measures period ended on March 31.
The children's animal classes, which were also suspended, will resume on May 1. The hands-on program explains animal behavior and ecology and runs five times a day — two morning sessions and three afternoon sessions — from Tuesday through Saturday. No advance reservations are required, and visitors can participate on a walk-in basis.
The children's zoo is home to 125 animals of 31 species, including fennec foxes, meerkats, Japanese macaques, sika deer and eagles. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the zoo is closed every Monday as well as on Lunar New Year's Day and Chuseok.
"We hope the zoo serves as an educational venue that helps children understand animals and develop respect for life," said Lim Sang-gyun, head of the Incheon Grand Park Office.
