Yeongdeok County in North Gyeongsang Province has assembled a dedicated task force (TF) and entered full-scale competition to host a new nuclear power plant.

According to the county government on Sunday, the TF comprises 30 members across five divisions — policy and budget, administration and public relations, site and technology, external cooperation, and future response — led by Deputy County Governor Hwang In-su.

The TF will serve as a control tower overseeing strategy development and execution for the nuclear plant bid.

The county previously submitted an application to host a new nuclear power plant construction candidate site to Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) on May 27.

A public opinion survey commissioned to a professional research firm ahead of the application showed 86% of county residents supported the bid.

The Yeongdeok County Council also passed a consent resolution for the bid unanimously ahead of schedule and adopted a resolution in favor of hosting the plant.

"The aspirations of our residents are strong, and we have prepared thoroughly," Yeongdeok County Governor Kim Gwang-yeol said. "With the launch of the TF, we will further strengthen our response system and secure the new nuclear power plant without fail."

The county's bid is for two APR1400 reactors, Korea's large-scale nuclear reactor model, with a combined capacity of 2.8 GW. A site of approximately 3.24 million square meters spanning Seok-ri, Nomul-ri, and Maejeong-ri in Yeongdeok-eup and Gyeongjeong-ri in Chuksan-myeon has been proposed as the candidate location.

The area was previously designated as the planned site for the Cheonji Nuclear Power Plant, confirming its verified suitability as a nuclear facility location.
