The city of Seongnam will sign a friendship city agreement with a delegation from Bekasi, a major industrial and economic hub in West Java, Indonesia, at the city hall's first conference room on the morning of July 7.
Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin and a delegation of eight members led by Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto Tjahyono attended the signing ceremony. Rina Wahyuningsih, minister-counselor at the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul, also accompanied the delegation.
Bekasi is a satellite city located east of Jakarta, Indonesia's capital. With a population of 2.6 million, it is a key industrial city experiencing rapid growth driven by large-scale industrial complexes and a strong manufacturing base. The city hosts a concentration of industries including automotive, electronics and logistics, and is regarded as a major hub of Indonesia's economic growth.
Seongnam and Bekasi have built a strong relationship in sports since signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between their respective sports councils in 2022. The core of this friendship city agreement is a significant expansion of exchanges across all areas of municipal administration — including economy and trade, intelligent transportation systems, tourism and cultural promotion, and environmental infrastructure — built on that foundation of trust.
In particular, the two cities share a common trait as adjacent to their respective national capitals, playing pivotal roles in the economy and industry of South Korea and Indonesia. The combination of Seongnam's advanced smart city infrastructure and Bekasi's dynamic growth potential is expected to generate strong synergies.
With this agreement, Seongnam has added one more friendship city to its international network, bringing its total to 14 partner cities — six sister cities and eight friendship cities.
