Seoul's Jung-gu District is launching a "Senior Bookstart" initiative targeting residents aged 50 and older, who account for 43% of the district's population.
The district plans to promote a reading culture among seniors through picture book packages, tailored reading programs, and training reading instructors.
The project, funded this year through participatory budgeting, operates by visiting all 11 small libraries within the district. Approximately 300 residents will receive packages containing two picture books, along with hands-on reading programs.
The programs incorporate "listening-based reading" and activities engaging fine motor skills and brain function to lower barriers to participation and boost interest. Sessions began in March at five libraries and will expand to the remaining locations in April.
In the second half of the year, the district will open a "Senior Picture Book Reading Instructor Course." Residents who complete the course will be supported in leading reading groups at small libraries, with pathways to obtain certifications and pursue reemployment and other forms of social participation.
The district expects the initiative to help seniors build daily reading habits and restore social connections with their neighbors.
