A large-scale public bus depot equipped with hydrogen and electric bus charging infrastructure has opened in Mogok-dong, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. It is the 38th public bus depot in Gyeonggi Province and is notable for operating exclusively with eco-friendly vehicles.
The "Central Region Bus Public Depot" opened on May 30, Gyeonggi Province said Monday. A total of 45.1 billion won ($33 million) was invested — 12 billion won from the central government and 33.1 billion won from the city — to build the facility with a total floor area of 2,170 square meters on a 30,303-square-meter site.
The depot represents Gyeonggi Province's commitment to transitioning to eco-friendly buses in response to the climate crisis. It is equipped with a liquefied hydrogen refueling station capable of handling up to 240 vehicles per day and a 6,000-kilowatt electric charging station that can charge 48 buses simultaneously, establishing a stable operational base for hydrogen and electric buses.
All 90 buses from four transport companies — including Hyeopjin Passenger and Pyeongtaek Passenger — scheduled to enter the depot this year will be electric or hydrogen vehicles. The depot provides a total of 338 parking spaces, including 220 for large buses and 118 for smaller vehicles. Facilities such as the administration building, maintenance building, car wash building and electrical room will be shared by tenant companies, with Pyeongtaek City Corporation managing operations.
The province plans to use this project as a model to continue supporting public bus depot projects across the region, driving qualitative growth in public transportation infrastructure.
"The depot will serve not only as a stable parking facility but also as a forward base to accelerate the era of eco-friendly public transportation in the Pyeongtaek area," said Yu Chung-ho, head of the Bus Management Division at Gyeonggi Province. "We will continue to actively identify areas in urgent need of depot construction and create a transportation environment that residents can truly feel the benefits of."
