The Busan Metropolitan Government will launch a sewage pipeline installation project to resolve odor problems at Taejongdae Park, one of the city's top tourist attractions.
The move comes after continued complaints over sewage from some public restrooms and temples within the park being discharged into nearby mountains and the sea after passing through septic tanks.
The city confirmed sewage discharge from eight of the park's 19 restrooms and decided to build a 3.1-kilometer pipeline to transport and treat the wastewater at the Yeongdo Sewage Treatment Plant.
Construction, overseen by the Yeongdo District Office, will begin this month with a target of early completion within the year. The project budget is 4 billion won ($2.9 million).
Once the project is completed, all sewage previously discharged into the Taejongdae park area will be fully intercepted and treated, which is expected to dramatically reduce odor problems.
Following the Taejongdae project, the city has also begun designing sewage pipeline upgrades to address odor issues at Busan Children's Grand Park.
