The Supreme Court has upheld a life sentence for Myeong Jae-wan (49), a teacher who stabbed and killed a first-grade student at an elementary school in Daejeon.
The First Division of the Supreme Court (presiding Justice Seo Gyeong-hwan) on Monday upheld the lower court's life sentence for Myeong, who was indicted on charges including violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (abduction and luring for profit), destruction of public property, and assault. A 30-year electronic ankle monitoring order was also upheld.
Myeong was charged with luring first-grader Kim Ha-neul, who was leaving after-school care at the elementary school where he worked, into an audiovisual room by saying he would "give her a book" at around 5 p.m. on February 10 last year, and then stabbing her to death with a weapon he had prepared in advance.
He was also charged with kicking and damaging a school computer four to five days before the crime, and assaulting a fellow teacher who had said "let's leave work together."
