The Supreme Court has upheld a three-year prison sentence for Jeon Jun-kyung, a former deputy chief of the Democratic Research Institute, who was charged with receiving approximately 800 million won ($580,000) in bribes from a Baekhyeon-dong property developer and others while serving as a non-standing commissioner of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC).
The First Division of the Supreme Court (presided by Justice Ma Yong-ju) on Monday finalized the lower court's ruling sentencing Jeon to a combined three years in prison on charges including bribery. Fines of 52 million won and forfeiture of 808 million won were also upheld.
Jeon was indicted for receiving a total of approximately 780 million won and a Genesis sedan from seven companies between July 2015 and March 2024 in exchange for allegedly mediating ACRC grievance petitions and local government permits and approvals. Of the total, approximately 100 million won and the sedan were found to have been provided by Jeong Ba-ul, former chairman of Paul Asia Developer, who was implicated in the Baekhyeon-dong development corruption scandal. Jeon was also charged with pocketing 26 million won in bribes related to his duties as a non-standing ACRC commissioner, including grievance petition deliberations, between January and July 2017.
