The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office indicted independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo (formerly of the Democratic Party of Korea) and former Seoul City Council member Kim Kyung on Wednesday after the two were arrested for allegedly exchanging 100 million won ($73,000) as a nomination donation during the 2022 local elections.
The office's Public Investigation Division 2, led by senior prosecutor Kim Hyung-won, said it formally indicted both with detention on Wednesday. Kang faces charges of violating the Political Funds Act, the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, and breach of trust for receiving bribes. Kim, who allegedly handed over the money, faces charges of violating the Political Funds Act and providing bribes in breach of trust.
Kang, then a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, allegedly received 100 million won in cash from Kim at a hotel in Seoul's Yongsan district in January 2022, ahead of the June local elections that year, in exchange for securing a party nomination. Kim subsequently received the party's sole nomination in Kang's constituency of Gangseo-gu, Seoul, and won the election.
