Busan Port Authority (BPA) has launched a full-scale effort to build a global cooperation framework aimed at the era of Arctic shipping routes. The move is a strategic initiative to gain an early foothold in the Arctic, where climate change is increasingly opening up navigation possibilities.
BPA announced Wednesday that it established a foundation for advancing into Arctic shipping routes through partnerships with key Arctic institutions in Tromsø, Norway, on Tuesday local time.
BPA first signed a memorandum of understanding with the Port of Tromsø on "sustainable utilization of Arctic shipping routes." The Port of Tromsø, an ice-free port in northern Norway's largest city, is regarded as a gateway for Arctic logistics. The agreement is a working-level cooperation framework covering port operation information sharing and eco-friendly route utilization, serving as a forward base in preparation for the commercialization of Arctic shipping routes.
BPA then made successive visits to the Arctic Council Secretariat and the city of Tromsø to build a governance structure encompassing policy, environmental and regional cooperation. The Arctic Council is an intergovernmental forum of eight Arctic nations that plays a leading role in setting standards for environmental protection and sustainable development. South Korea participates as an observer.
BPA also expanded its multilateral cooperation network. The authority officially joined the Arctic Economic Council (AEC), entering a platform for Arctic economic cooperation. The AEC is a pan-Arctic cooperative body with 35 member organizations worldwide, including private companies, public institutions and indigenous peoples' organizations, serving as a practical channel for Arctic development and business collaboration.
BPA plans to continue strengthening its global cooperation network to position itself as a key hub in the Arctic shipping route era. "Building a maritime ecosystem that encompasses decarbonization, safety and community inclusion is essential," BPA President Song Sang-geun said. "We will further solidify this cooperative framework and continuously expand the foundation for Busan Port to lead the Arctic shipping route era."
