Chilgapsan Observatory in Cheongyang County, South Chungcheong Province, will reopen on January 17 following an eight-month renovation project.
Cheongyang County began construction in July last year, transforming the entire exhibition hall into an experience-based theme space aligned with current trends. The renovation significantly expanded interactive content, allowing visitors to engage directly with space exploration rather than passively viewing static displays.
The observatory entrance has been redesigned to simulate boarding an actual spacecraft, while immersive media art installations throughout the lobby and exhibition halls create an overwhelming sense of presence.
Hands-on exhibits including "Birth of a Star" and "Solar and Lunar Eclipses" enable children to learn scientific principles through direct manipulation, enhancing educational value.
The most notable change is the outdoor area transformation. A new "Moonlight Garden" photo zone against Cheongyang's pristine night sky offers couples and families opportunities to capture memorable photographs.
The observatory has addressed its previous limitation of having little to offer during cloudy weather. Indoor exhibitions and high-definition media art experiences now allow visitors to enjoy the mysteries of space regardless of conditions, positioning the facility as an all-weather tourist destination.
Outdoor astronomical observation programs remain subject to weather conditions, though indoor exhibitions and media art are available throughout operating hours. The county recommends advance reservations through the official website, particularly on clear days when visitor numbers are expected to surge.
"We have completed all preparations to provide the central region's finest astronomical experience for Cheongyang residents and tourists who have waited so long for this reopening," a county official said. "We have put great care into every exhibit and ask for your continued interest and support."
