Ahn Hyung-joo, a Gwangju Seo-gu district councilman gaining attention as a leading young candidate for the Democratic Party of Korea, has filed to run for the Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Seo-gu District 4) ahead of local elections on June 3.
Ahn, considered a strong contender within the Democratic Party, completed his preliminary candidate registration on the 3rd and has launched his campaign in earnest.
"I will redesign the future of Kumho, Sangmu, and Seochang with expertise in urban planning and fresh ideas for building an AI-star city," Ahn told Seoul Economic Daily on the 5th. "I will devote all my efforts to building a greater Seo-gu with proven capabilities and youthful sensibility."
As chairman of the Social and Urban Committee in the latter half of the 9th Seo-gu Council term, Ahn has earned the nickname "complaint resolver" among local residents through consistent community engagement.
His political philosophy of "together with residents" is evident in the "Gwangju Seo-gu Resident Participation Point System Operation Ordinance"—the first resident-initiated ordinance in Seo-gu.
The system awards points to residents based on their participation in various stages of district policy development and implementation. Accumulated points, up to 100,000 annually, can be exchanged for Onnuri gift certificates, supporting both civic engagement and the local economy.
Ahn has led efforts to lower barriers to resident-initiated ordinances, including a complete revision of the "Ordinance on Resident Ordinance Proposals" during the 328th extraordinary session.
His track record includes a Presidential Citation received last month for contributing to peace and unification awareness and resident welfare. Multiple legislative awards have cemented his reputation as a "hardworking councilman" among constituents.
