Daegu Metropolitan City announced on the 4th that it has been selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "Autonomous Driving Pilot Zone Service Support Project," securing 600 million won in state funding.
The project, organized by the Korea Intelligent Automotive Parts Promotion Institute, focuses on demonstrating autonomous freight transport services for logistics center-to-center transport and last-mile delivery within urban areas.
A total of 1.2 billion won will be invested over one year, with 600 million won each from state and municipal budgets.
Daegu will establish an integrated logistics service control and data center to build a real-time monitoring system. The city will also lease and operate 15-ton and 5-ton vehicle platforms to evaluate the commercial viability of medium and large-scale autonomous logistics.
Additionally, utilizing existing autonomous driving platforms, the city will pursue various small-scale logistics services including delivery of goods for NongHyup Hanaro Mart, meal box delivery, and laundry transport.
Jung Ui-gwan, Director of Future Innovation Growth at Daegu Metropolitan City, said, "This will be an important turning point for Daegu to lead the autonomous logistics sector." He added, "Based on the results from the pilot zone demonstration, we will expand services throughout Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province and complete a future autonomous driving model that integrates passenger and freight transport."
