Seongdong District Mayor Jung Won-oh will sign off on the "2026 Comprehensive Resident Safety Plan" on the 4th, concluding 12 years of district administration. He plans to resign from his post and register as a preliminary candidate for Seoul mayor on the 5th, entering the Democratic Party's Seoul mayoral primary.
According to Seongdong District on the 3rd, Mayor Jung will approve the safety plan as his final official act. On July 1, 2014, his first day in office during the 6th popularly elected term, Jung began his tenure by hand-signing the "Seongdong District Facility Safety Inspection Implementation Plan."
At that time, he ordered a comprehensive inspection of all facilities across the district, emphasizing that "safety is both the foundation and completion of public administration." Since then, he has championed safety as a core value through various policies, including measures for semi-basement and aging housing safety, pedestrian and child-centered traffic environments, and strengthened industrial site safety inspections.
The "2026 Comprehensive Resident Safety Plan" consolidates and advances these safety policies, comprising 23 projects across five areas: daily life, transportation, housing, industry, and safety education. Key initiatives include enhanced operation of the 24-hour disaster and safety situation room, pedestrian environment improvements in Seongsu-dong's Yeonmujang-gil, expanded walking school buses and smart crosswalks, residential environment improvements for vulnerable groups, sewer maintenance, and increased safety inspections for small businesses.
A Seongdong District official explained, "Mayor Jung is concluding both the start of his 6th term and the end of his 8th term with 'resident safety.'"
The district plans to establish a "sustainable development plan" reviewing personnel and budgets for each project to ensure no gap in safety administration following the change in leadership.
"It is meaningful to conclude 12 years of district administration with the same commitment to protecting resident safety that I had on my first day in office," Mayor Jung said. "Safety is not something with a beginning and end, but a continuous task that must be checked and improved daily. I will carefully monitor safety conditions in the field until my very last moment."
He added, "I hope the administrative principle of prioritizing resident safety will continue unchanged, built upon the safety systems Seongdong has established. I also thank all Seongdong District employees who have quietly fulfilled their roles in their respective positions."
