Strawberries, the signature agricultural product of Miryang in South Gyeongsang Province, have been registered under the government-certified geographical indication "Miryang Strawberry."
Miryang City announced on the 3rd that the geographical indication for "Miryang Strawberry," applied for by the Miryang Strawberry Producers' Council Cooperative, was recently finalized.
The geographical indication system registers and protects agricultural products whose quality and reputation are influenced by geographical characteristics such as a specific region's natural environment and production methods, by marking them with the corresponding regional name. Once registration is completed, the name is legally protected, preventing agricultural products from other regions from using the same name. Only producers meeting quality standards can attach the geographical indication mark.
With this registration, "Miryang Strawberry" gains exclusive rights to its name and is expected to establish itself as a government-certified premium strawberry brand for consumers.
The city plans to accelerate expansion of its nationwide distribution network and entry into premium markets following the geographical indication registration.
Shin Sang-cheol, director of the city's Agricultural Technology Center, said, "This geographical indication registration marks a turning point in elevating Miryang Strawberry's brand competitiveness. We will work with the cooperative to implement systematic quality control and build consumer trust."
