Korea National Railway (KR) GTX Division announced on the 3rd that it has completed installation of two 24-passenger elevators at the Siheung overpass pedestrian bridge of Geumcheon-gu Office Station on the Gyeongbu Line, with operations commencing on the 28th of last month.
The pedestrian bridge previously lacked elevator access, forcing mobility-impaired passengers including wheelchair users and those with strollers to take lengthy detours.
The GTX Division invested 4.8 billion won ($3.4 million) in the project, responding to recommendations from the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission issued in April 2024.
Travel time for mobility-impaired local passengers is expected to be reduced from 30 minutes to 5 minutes, significantly improving accessibility.
"The elevator installation at the Siheung overpass pedestrian bridge will greatly enhance mobility convenience and safety for all passengers, including those with disabilities," said Song Hye-chun, head of KR's GTX Division. "We will continue our efforts to expand railway infrastructure that delivers practical improvements to the public's travel experience."
