The Gyeongnam Provincial Office of Education held its eighth memorial ceremony on March 3 at the "Memory and Hope" human rights and peace monument in front of its second office building. Superintendent Park Jong-hoon and senior officials attended the event.
The monument was established on February 28, 2018, under the theme of "remembering the human rights violations against Japanese military comfort women victims and hoping for peaceful reunification." A monument construction committee comprising internal and external experts selected the design through a public competition process starting in September 2017.
The ceremony was organized to commemorate the eighth anniversary of the monument and the 107th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement. Attendees paid tribute to comfort women victims through flower offerings and a moment of silence.
"I hope this memorial ceremony serves as an opportunity to awaken a heavy sense of responsibility in our hearts," Superintendent Park said. "The Gyeongnam education community will take the lead in realizing the values of human rights and peace based on a proper understanding of history."
